The old lady has been all tarted up and given a major face lift, not to mention some nice bionic implants. The target audience this time around is the young and comfortably affluent with a thing for the "wellness" craze. Currently Zurich's top level of luxury; includes a full-on spa.
Kurhausstrasse 65,
8032 Zürich; Kreis 7. Rates: CHF 850 - 14,000 (that's not a typo); have a gape at www.thedoldergrand.com.
Easy Hotel
From the Easy Jet people comes the same concept for hotels: no frills, comfortable and cheaper the earlier you book. While in the feisty Langstrasse neighbourhood, it's on one of its quietest streets, named after a quintessentially no-frills Swiss.
Zwinglistrasse 14, 8004 Zurich; Kreis 4. Rates: CHF 50 - 200; www.easyhotel.com.
Etap
Minimalism at its best. Every room costs the same and is comprised of the same modular furnishings: one double bed with a single bunk above it. No phone, no frills, except that it’s smack dab in the middle of the trendoid Zurich West district.
Technoparkstrasse 2, 8005 Zurich; Kreis 5. Rates: CHF 85; www.etaphotel.com
Florhof
A quietly elegant hotel housed in a former patrician villa away from the bustle of the city but still central. Stylish and comfortable, with an excellent restaurant.
Florhofgasse 4, 8001 Zurich; Kreis 1. Rates: CHF 340 – 630; www.florhof.ch
Four Points
A snazzy new hotel in the Sihlcity shopping complex offers rooms in an area not generally covered by the hospitality industry. Rooms are boxy and modern, with flat-screen TVs, high-speed Internet and video-on-demand. Perfect for those visiting friends in the Zurich-Brunau area.

Greulich
1930’s architecture meets 21st century interior design. A must for style junkies and anyone else who really appreciates a cool atmosphere. Garden rooms are off an inner courtyard. The restaurant is exceptional as well.
Hermann-Greulich-Strasse 56, 8004 Zurich; Kreis 4. Rates CHF 270 – 650; www.greulich.ch
Helvetia
This 14-room (and 2-appartment) boutique hotel was not only crafted with the help of the obvious interior decorators, it also has its own curator who is responsible for the design concept, and gets its wall decorations from the collection of the Haus Konstruktiv across the river. And it's comfy, too.
Stauffacherquai 1, 8004 Zurich; Kreis 4. Rates CHF 220 – 350; www.hotel-helvetia.ch
Kafischnaps
The 5 rooms are each named after a different schnapps and beautifully designed in the colours of the fruit that it's made of. The entrance is through the smoky café of the same name; just announce yourself to the bartender – there’s no reception desk.
Kornhausstrasse 57, 8037 Zurich; Kreis 10. Rates: CHF 88 – 118; www.kafischnaps.ch
Limmathof
Simple, clean and centrally located, close to the train station at the beginning of Limmatquai, this place is a good deal and has both a decent vegetarian restaurant and a typical Swiss stübli.
Limmatquai 142, 8001 Zurich; Kreis 1. Rates CHF 154 – 170; www.limmathof.com

Luxury glass-and-steel venue with state-of-the art conveniences, friendly staff, monstrously wonderful bathrooms and a great restaurant that draws locals as well as guests.

Plattenhof
Beautiful bathrooms and antique parquet floors characterise this quiet boutique hotel outside the centre and above the university. Rooms include high-end features such as a flat-screen TV with an Xbox. The restaurant is good, if somewhat pricey.
Plattenstrasse 26, 8032 Zurich; Kreis 7. Rates: CHF 285 – 315; www.plattenhof.ch
Rex
Up the slope from the old town in a quiet neighbourhood, this hotel has simple but comfortable rooms. A good place for basic overnights.

Rössli
Located in a quiet alley in the Niederdorf, these rooms are small but well-designed, each with its own individual style. The top floor contains a luxury apartment with a private roof terrace.
Rössligasse 7, 8001 Zurich; Kreis 1. Rates CHF 270 – 740; www.hotelroessli.ch
Rothaus
You’d never know that these white, simple rooms with clean lines and pastel accents used to harbour a clientele with an hourly turnover. Zurich’s “seedy” neighbourhood (although it compares to other bad neighbourhoods like the Disneyland Matterhorn does to the real thing) is being spruced up a block at a time, with this venue as its exemplary model.
Sihlhallenstrasse 1, 8004 Zurich; Kreis 4. Rates: CHF 118 – 265; www.hotelrothaus.ch
Seefeld
Boutique hotel by the Opera and the Bellevue quarter. Rooms are small but stylishly appointed.

Wellenberg
If you like a room in the middle of everything, this is for you – it’s located at the Hollywood and Vine of the Niederdorf. A bit bland in the style department but with great service and amenities. And - Gorbachev slept here.
Niederforfstrasse 10, 8001 Zurich; Kreis 1. Rates: CHF 275 – 500; www.hotel-wellenberg.ch
Widder
Eight historic townhouses were combined to make up this unique hotel, but you’ll find all the modern accoutrements inside. This is where we’d stay if we didn’t already live here, and actually had some money. Its location is dead-central.
Rennweg 7, 8001 Zurich; Kreis 1. Rates: CHF 640 – 3200; www.widder.ch
Zürichberg
The gorgeous view of the city from the top of the hill vies with the beautifully designed rooms of the snail shell-shaped annex for best thing about this place. It’s cooler up here during hot summers and often above the low fog ceiling in winter.
Orellistrasse 21, 8044 Zurich; Kreis 7. Rates: CHF 230 – 450; www.zuerichberg.ch
