Shutter Island

lPlot: US Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is sent with a new partner (Mark Ruffalo) to an island near Boston to investigate a woman missing from a hospital for the criminally insane. Once there, the staff seem helpful but in reality keep stalling on the facts and appear to be more interested in talking philosophy. Realizing he’s not going to get anywhere, Daniels threatens to drop the case and leave, but a storm is on the way, cutting the marshals off from the mainland. And a closer look at the details has made Daniels sure the head of the hospital (Ben Kinglsey) is hiding something.

Review: On his continued quest to delve into man’s propensity for violence, director Martin Scorsese borrows some ideas from Alfred Hitchcock and a stairwell from “The Red Shoes” to create a 1950’s style thriller where not everything is what it seems.

Audiences who have become used to serious modern plot twists (“The Sixth Sense” being the best example) may find themselves waiting throughout the movie for the other shoe to drop, only to find there was only one in the first place. This makes the movie a little less thrilling, but lukewarm Scorsese beats piping hot Hollywood blockbuster any day. A good night out with a box of popcorn in any case.
